C’ è chi ne ha sentito parlare, c’ è chi ne riconosce le caratteristiche, c’è anche chi una volta l’ ha provato, ma senza entusiasmanti risultati, poi c’ è chi lo usa sfruttandone le caratteristiche creative.
Il procedimento chimico denominato cross-processing è una tecnica di sviluppo che altera i colori ed i contrasti dell’immagine e si ottiene:
- sviluppando una pellicola positiva a colori nella chimica delle pellicole negative colore (E6 > C41). Il prodotto finale è un negativo dai forti contrasti e dai colori molto accesi;
- sviluppando una pellicola negativa utilizzando i prodotti chimici destinati alla diapositiva (C41 > E6). In questo caso si ottengono contrasti molto leggeri e colori tenui in genere caratterizzati da una dominante arancio.

The chemical process called cross-processing is a development technique that alters the colors and contrasts of the image and it is obtained:
- developing a color positive film in the chemistry of color negative films (E6> C41). The final product is a negative with strong contrasts and very bright colors;
- developing a negative film using chemicals intended for the slide (C41> E6). In this case, very light contrasts and soft colors are obtained, generally characterized by an orange dominant.

La tecnica nasce per merito di alcuni fotografi grazie ad un errore e venne già ampiamente usata a partire dagli anni ’60.
Le pellicole trattate in Cross Process nei laboratori commerciali, possono dare risultati imprevedibili, ma se gestite in modo controllato e manualmente, la gamma di contrasti ed i colori accesi non vanno mai fuori controllo.
Per chi vuole sperimentare vi è ancora molto spazio d’ azione poiché ogni tipo di film restituisce risultati diversi.
La tecnica è ampiamente usata in cinematografia per ottenere atmosfere particolari, ecco un esempio:

Films treated in Cross Process in commercial laboratories can give unpredictable results, but if managed in a controlled and manual way, the range of contrasts and bright colors never go out of control.
